Cushman Complete Street Reconstruction

Exclusive Paving was awarded the Cushman Complete Street reconstruction project located in the heart of Downtown Fairbanks. The goal of the project was to replace and upgrade all underground utilities as well as enhance the roadway and sidewalks for a better downtown experience. Work was started on the reconstruction project in June 2015 and is scheduled completed by June 2016.

The reconstruction had several different variables both below and above ground to consider. The below ground work included replacing and upgrading several utilities which comprised of water, sewer, storm drain, steam, electrical, and communications lines, as well as introducing a new natural gas main down Cushman Street. Some of the underground utilities were nearly 60 years old which brought up complications due to the age of the utility lines and their unknown locations. In several locations, wood stave pipe had to be tied into or replaced including the replacement of a wood stave sewer manhole. Because the work was in the heart of downtown, there were many things that had to be taken into account including the deep excavations (up to 18 feet deep) and the number of different utilities. Exclusive had to work closely with the city and their engineering department since the design was constantly changing due to new obstructions being found or the location of the existing utilities were unknown. It was time consuming and challenging to coordinate with the affected subcontractors and utility companies operating in the tight work zone; good communication was essential so that everyone could work together as efficiently as possible.

There are a multitude of businesses in downtown Fairbanks and summer tourism plays a large part into making these local businesses successful; consequently, it was important to keep the public and businesses updated on the continual changes and evolving schedule for a safe and successful project. Above ground upgrades included reducing the driving lanes from three down to two lanes which allowed for wider sidewalks that included ADA-compliant curb ramps.

After a long and busy summer, Exclusive received positive recognition from the Mayor of Fairbanks, the Planning & Permitting Manager, and the acting City Engineer regarding the project: “The City would like to thank Exclusive Paving for all their hard work this summer, and again thank the downtown business owners and residents for their patience during construction. This is a great project for Fairbanks – good for downtown, and a great welcome for visitors to our community.”
