BP -  Armor Block

BP’s North Star Island in summer - the left and right shores are covered with URM Armor Block

University Redi-Mix Precast Division has been supplying the oil fields on the North Slope of Alaska for many years. In the last three years, they’ve worked with BP on their North Star Island located several miles off-shore.

This island is entirely man-made and is currently a gathering center for several wells. BP asked URM for help in designing and manufacturing an improved Beach Erosion Armor Block. URM responded with a design that utilized 15,000 PSI concrete with very low permeability and a shape that reduces the abrasion wear caused by the violent Arctic Ocean storms that slam the island with building-sized blocks of ice.
