Port of Anchorage

2008 MARINE TERMINAL REDEVELOPMENT
PORT OF ANCHORAGE
PROJECT #4414-1-C170
VALUE: $94,934,802

The Port of Anchorage (POA) is currently undergoing an expansion that includes construction of the POA North Extension by QAP. The U.S. Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration is the lead federal agency of the project.

The North Extension Project as defined herein, is one of a series of construction phases to create approximately 120 acres of new property by reclaiming tidal and sub- tidal areas and provide the basic structure for new waterfront facilities by installation of a sheet pile bulkhead.  Work associated with this project includes, but is not limited to the following elements:

  • Dredging of seafloor materials from within and adjacent to the Project footprint and sub-trench dredging and backfill along the sheet pile bulkhead footprint, 125,000 CY.
  • Construction of a sheet pile bulkhead and tail walls in an open cell sheet pile configuration, 576,000 LF / 110mile / 11,000 tons of steel will be driven.
  • Mining, processing, hauling, and placing granular and common fill materials and construction of rock protected dikes using 1.8 million CY of fill to create 18 acres of new land.
  • Salvage and stockpile of rock materials placed during previous contracts.
  • Deep compaction of fill materials using vibra-compaction methods and layer compaction of materials placed above elevation +24 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW).
  • Installation of 2000LF of drainage pipe and structures.
  • Major challenges will be placing the fill material and installing sheet pile in to Cook Inlet, where the tide range is up to 35’ with a 9 knot current.  This is largest tidal difference in the United States.
  • The project will be 60% complete by the end of 2008
  • Project is scheduled for completion in November 30, 2009
